Broken Light 2018

53.00

Maritime Series 2018

I like to manipulate the paint, playing with layers and textures scraping over a wax surface and blending with sponges and rags. The creative process is often instinctive but subjects can sometimes develop over time and although I am drawn to abstract forms and structures I can find hidden images within the composition and the work can suddenly begin to transform. Colour is important and I will always be inspired by the natural elements, I like the contrast of earthy tones mixed with more vibrant hues of orange and purple.

In this work the title refers to the old structure of a broken derelict lighthouse, once a vital navigation beacon but now a rusting relic crumbling into the sea. I draw inspiration from the coastal landscape of my hometown and this is often referred to in the title. While the subject isn't at first apparent, the use of colour and texture would hopefully resonate with the viewer, I like the mystery of this piece, but the two dominant dark shapes are suggestive of windows.
